Although to date, most work in this field has focused on silica glass, non-silica microstructured fibers are attractive for applications including nonlinear devices, mid-IR transmission and photonic bandgap operation.

The technique that has been developed most extensively to date is extrusion, which has proved to be a flexible approach to realizing fibers from relatively small quantities of bulk glass. Using conventional solid fiber designs, it is in general necessary to identify two compatible glasses for the production of low loss optical fibers. Note that since microstructured fibers can be made from a single material, this technology is a powerful way of producing fibers from glasses with useful optical properties without requiring that compatible cladding materials be found.
