Abraham lost his mother to illness when he was nine years old, and not long after lost older sister Sarah, who died during childbirth. It was a hard life for Lincoln, who went to work early. But the tide of the Civil War began to change after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. As the Union won victory after victory, the Army freed slaves as it invaded deeper into the South. The Emancipation Proclamation was the forerunner to the most important piece of legislation that passed during Lincoln’s time in office. On January 31, 1865, Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude.
