One of his work responsibilities was building fences, a fact that would later be used in political campaigns, giving him the identity as a tough “rail-splitter” and a gritty axman.

But the tide of the Civil War began to change after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. As the Union won victory after victory, the Army freed slaves as it invaded deeper into the South. The Emancipation Proclamation was the forerunner to the most important piece of legislation that passed during Lincoln’s time in office. On January 31, 1865, Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude.
